The Emerald Eagle Scholars Program (EESP) provides access to higher education for academically talented students with high financial need, and connects them to campus resources while engaging them in activities that facilitate their intellectual engagement, academic success and, ultimately, the timely completion of their bachelor’s degrees.  One way that EESP has been able to do this is by sponsoring the program fee and plane ticket for 15 students to study abroad.  The funded students were selected through a competitive process, which involved submitting an application, obtaining faculty recommendations, and an in-person interview.

This Summer 2015, students participated on the Spanish Langauge and Culture program through Sol Education Abroad.  Students earned six hours of credit by taking classes taught in English and/or Spanish from a porfolio of classes ranging in topics from beginning Spanish to Printmaking to the Mexican Economy and more.  To complete the immersion experience, students lived with host families and participated in cultural activities such as a traditional cooking class and excursions to pre-Hispanic archelogical sites.
